By    |   Friday, 08 Aug 2014 05:24 PM

Jake Hooker, known for co-writing the classic "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" and a member of the '70s band The Arrows, died Monday at the age of 61.

Along with Alan Merrill and Paul Varley, Hooker was a guitarist for the Arrows, a British band that had two Top 40 hits, “A Touch Too Much” and “My Last Night with You.”

But Hooker is most well-known for penning “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll” with Merrill, although it wasn’t a hit when the Arrows sang it. Instead, six years later, it went to the top of the charts for Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, eventually becoming a classic.

Hooker was born in Haifa, Israel, as Jerry Mamberg. His family relocated to the United States when he was a child.

The Arrows split in the late '70s and Hooker went on to pursue a successful career writing and producing soundtracks for movies like “Flashdance,” “Top Gun,” and “Rocky IV.”

Hooker was divorced from Lorna Luft, with whom he had two children. Luft is the daughter of Judy Garland and the sister of Liza Minelli.

Hooker’s first grandchild was born recently, and Luft said in a statement quoted in Highlight Hollywood, “After a weekend of such joy with the birth of our granddaughter Jordan Eloise Richards, I have learned that Jordan’s grandfather, my former husband Jake Hooker, passed away this morning. Jake was an accomplished musician and the father of my children. We are heartbroken. I have no other plans but to grieve with my children and be grateful for the gift that is our precious Jordan.”

Former Arrows band member Merrill tweeted:
