Jacob Bernstein, a New York Times reporter who sparked a backlash for reportedly calling first lady Melania Trump a "hooker," is owning up to his “stupid” remark.

The New York Times reporter took to Twitter on Tuesday to take responsibility and apologize for the comment he made during a conversation over the weekend, according to USA Today.

“I want to take ownership of a mistake I made,” Bernstein started off by saying in his four-part Twitter apology, before going on to apologize for what he called a "mistake, referring to unfounded rumors."

Phil Corbett, The New York Times’ associate managing editor for standards, said he believed that issuing an apology on Twitter was a good way to bring some closure to the issue, The New York Times reported.

“We realize people were speculating about this, and no one wanted that,” Corbett said. “Everyone knows this was inappropriate.”

Bernstein, 38, was having a private conversation with actress and model Emily Ratajkowski, 25, when he made the controversial remarks.

His sentiments weren’t received well at all by Ratajkowski, who took to Twitter on Monday, accusing Bernstein of slut shaming the first lady with his “disgusting, sexist” comments, USA Today noted.

The New York Times issued a statement about the matter, according to USA Today.

“At a party last night, a Times reporter who does not cover Washington or politics, referred to an unfounded rumor regarding Melania Trump,” the company said in the statement. “The comment was not intended to be public, but it was nonetheless completely inappropriate and should not have occurred. Editors have talked to the reporter in question about the lapse.”

The first lady posted a tweet late Monday in the aftermath of Ratajkowski’s rant.

This incident comes after Melania Trump recently re-filed a lawsuit against the Daily Mail for accusing her of being an escort in the past, according to BBC News.

Trump is seeking $150 million in the case.
