Iran destroyed 100,000 satellite dishes and receivers on Sunday, saying it hoped to stop citizens from watching "morally damaging" television programs, reported the Daily Mail.

Satellite television equipment is actually banned under Iranian law and people can be fined as much as $2,800 for using, distributing or repairing them.

"The truth is that most satellite channels... deviate the society's morality and culture," Gen. Mohammad Reza Naghdi, head of Iran's Basij militia, said at a ceremony in Tehran where the satellite equipment was destroyed.

"What these televisions really achieve is increased divorce, addiction and insecurity in society. Most of these satellite channels not only weaken the foundation of families but also cause disruptions in children's education and children who are under the influence of satellite have improper behavior."

Iranian Culture Minister Ali Jannati said the law should be changed, noted Agence France-Presse,

"Reforming this law is very necessary as using satellite is strictly prohibited, but most people use it," Jannati said. "This means that 70 percent of Iranians violate the law."

Naghdi, though, pushed back on Jannati's suggestion, according to AFP, saying that cultural affairs "should be truthful with people rather than following what pleases them."

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has said before that he believed the satellite ban was unnecessary and counterproductive, according to the Daily Mail.

Cubic Lane said there are numerous satellite television channels broadcasting signals into Iran, including many dedicated to news, entertainment, movies, and television series in Persian.

Iranian conservatives have charged that the channels are trying to change the country's culture and undermine Islamic values.
