Business mogul and reality TV star Donald Trump
’s decision not to run for the presidency, which he announced Monday, has Iowa Republicans wondering: Is he still coming to our big annual fundraiser?
The Iowa Republican Party hopes to hear today whether Trump will still attend its annual fundraising dinner early next month, USA Today reported Tuesday.
Trump decided not to attend a South Carolina tea party rally scheduled for later this week after making his decision not to run for president. That has some in the Palmetto State a bit irked.
"I understand Mr. Trump is a busy man, and that members of Columbia Tea Party are just your average everyday hard-working Americans, but I do think we deserved better," said Allen Olsen, chairman of the South Carolina Tea Party.
The Iowa GOP still has hope though that Trump will headline the annual Lincoln Day Dinner. Casey Mills, a party spokesman, said Monday that Trump was evaluating whether he will attend.
“While our invitation to Mr. Trump never hinged on a potential Trump candidacy, Iowans responded enthusiastically and with great interest in his appearance at our annual Lincoln Day Dinner,” Mills said.
“Today, it is our understanding that Mr. Trump is reassessing his commitment. We anticipate a final decision on his June 10 appearance will be made tomorrow and we will make further comments at that time.”
