iOS 8.1 problems are plaguing iPhone and iPad users who upgraded to the latest version of Apple's mobile operating system.

The upgrade was released Monday morning to much fanfare, as it included the new Apple Pay system that allows users to digitize their credit cards and carry a copy on their phone. The only trouble is that it's also draining people's batteries.

"I experienced this fast battery draining thing myself with iOS 8.1 on an iPhone 6 Plus, which after the update started to run physically warm to the touch and was losing battery at a highly unusual rate, where you can basically watch the percentage indicator tick down in real time," OS X Daily wrote, saying many readers had contacted them complaining about the same issue.

Tech experts explained that the battery drainage was likely due to the operating system doing a little background cleanup, including processes related to Spotlight search. It said the "intensive CPU activity" would likely go away after a few hours on its own after the background processes are complete, and recommended plugging the phone in during the update and for an hour or two afterward.

In some cases, the phone may need a hard reset, performed by holding down the home button and sleep button simultaneously for several seconds.

Last but not least, users should check out their GPS settings. Accessing that section of the Settings app should point out the apps most actively updating in the background.

Other problems reported included Wi-Fi connectivity, cellular data connectivity, and Bluetooth connectivity. For all of these, its recommended users try toggling each of the features on and off in the Settings app. Putting the phone on Airplane Mode for a minute might also help.

If that doesn't work, users can visit the "General" section of the Settings app, and navigate to Reset. By resetting everything users will lose any custom settings, but by restoring everything to factory defaults could clear up a lot of issues.
