A major Delaware bridge that crosses the Christina River on Interstate 495 will remain closed indefinitely after an inspection revealed four of the 37 support columns have tilted out of vertical alignment, the Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) announced earlier this week.

Engineers told The Wilmington News Journal that the bridge isn't currently in danger of collapsing, but will stay closed while workers gather information on soil conditions and other factors that may have caused the bridge supports to shift.

The bridge was closed at 6 p.m. local time Monday, and officials expect a significant impact on commuters. In addition to assessing support columns under the bridge, engineers plan to examine the results of a tilt meter that will provide data on whether the bridge is moving.

"We've got our bridge engineers and bridge contractors who are examining the bridge," Secretary of Transportation Shailen Bhatt told The Journal.

Northbound traffic at Terminal Avenue will be closed, and DelDOT has message boards in place for I-95 and SR 1 and Rt. 13. Local northbound traffic can still access I-495 to Terminal Avenue. Southbound lanes will be closed at the Pennsylvania State Line. The Wilmington Police Department has advised motorists to take alternate routes and exit I-495 prior to 12th Street when possible.

The bridge was built in 1974 and last inspected in October 2012, DelDOT said. This particular section of bridge carries an estimated 90,000 vehicles each day.
