With a current population of 1.32 billion, India has surpassed China in population, becoming the world's most populous country, according to an academic who has questioned China's population figures.

University of Wisconsin-Madison academic Yi Fuxian claims that Chinese statisticians have gotten it wrong for the past 26 years, and China's population has been overestimated by about 90 million over the years, according to the International Business Times.

Fuxian spoke out about these claims at a news conference in Beijing. He said he believes China "inflated rates of fertility" among its women, which is why the country's population has been wrongfully stated.

"I think the real number is 1.29 billion, but the government thinks it is 1.38 billion," he said. "India is maybe 1.32 billion right now."

Fuxian said he hopes that his new findings will start a much-needed conversation about China's "demographic timebomb," IBT reported.

His claims, however, have created strife between Indian and Chinese scholars, according to The Guardian.

Wang Feng, a demographer from the University of California, Irvine, called Fuxian's claims "sloppy" and discredited his calculations.

"He’s a person with a political agenda and [who has been] a consistent critic of the Chinese government’s policy ... [so] his numbers should not be taken at face value," Feng said.

"I don’t disagree with his general criticisms [of China’s birth control policy]," Feng added. "But ... we have to speak from facts or we just speak from conjecture ... I think he just wants to make a point to say that fertility is very low in China, the government has inflated the birth numbers, and [therefore] China should have no birth control policy."

Feng was also asked about China's actual population and what he thinks it is.

"I would go with the government number," he said.
