"Independence Day Resurgence" has been decided on as the title of the sequel to the 1996 summer blockbuster that united the world in its fight against an alien force.

The original "Independence Day," which starred Will Smith, Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman, was the top grossing moving of 1996, making more than $800 million at the box office – $306.1 million domestically and another $511.2 million overseas, according to Box Office Mojo.com.

"Independence Day Resurgence" will have to save the world without Smith when it lands in theaters on June 24, 2016. But 20th Century Fox did manage to re-sign Goldblum and Pullman, along with Vivica A. Fox and Judd Hirsch, reported Variety.

They will be joined by "Independence Day" newcomers Liam Hemsworth, Jessie Usher, Maika Monroe, Sela Ward and Charlotte Gainsbourg. The cast appeared on a Twitter post by writer Dean Devlin.

Ward, who plays the new president of the United States in the film, told fans on Saturday that she was already working hard on her role.

Director Roland Emmerich told Cinema Blend that he wanted Smith to be a part of the new "Independence Day" followup but the actor decided not to do another science fiction film after doing "After Earth" with his son Jaden Smith.

"In the very beginning, I wanted to work with him and he was excited to be in it but then after a while he was tired of sequels, and he did another science fiction film, which was his father-son story, so he opted out," said Emmerich.

"After Earth" turned out to be a major disappointment for Smith. It earned $60.5 million domestically and $183.3 million overseas when it was released in 2013, according to Box Office Mojo.
