Hunter Mauled by Bear in Alaska; Friend Kills Mama and Her Cub

A mama brown bear that mauled a hunter in Alaska was shot and killed by the man's hunting partner who then turned his gun on one of her two bear cubs that popped out from some brush.

KMXT reported Michael Snowden, 68, of Sitka suffered leg injuries in the brown bear attack Tuesday on a small Alaskan island, according to The Associated Press.

An initial report said as many as five bears had attacked the two men, suggesting the mother bear had four cubs with her. The cubs were described as "older" and bigger bears.

Snowden and Jeff Ostrin of Camas, Washington, had dragged a deer they had shot to a beach to be picked up and stopped for lunch. The bears apparently caught wind of the dead deer.

A sow came through the brush and attacked Snowden. Ostrin stepped back, took aim with his rifle and killed it. One of the bear's two cubs then emerged, and Ostrin fatally shot it.

State wildlife official Larry Van Daele said Ostrin is a hero for killing the bears, tending to Snowden's wounds and getting help.

The hunters were in Sally Island which is about 30 miles east of Kodiak City in Uganik Bay.
