Frederick Humphries: Shirtless FBI Photo to Jill Kelley a Joke

By    |   Friday, 16 Nov 2012 10:38 AM

The shirtless photo FBI agent Frederick W. Humphries II sent to Jill Kelley, the Tampa, Fla. socialite who frequents military social circles, has been uncovered and it is a joke, Humphries tells the Seattle Times.

In the continually unfolding saga that has been dubbed “Love Pentagon,” the photo had led FBI agents to believe Humphries had inappropriately inserted himself into the case of ex-CIA director David Petraeus. Humphries was peripheral to the case, but never officially assigned to it. The photo shows Humphries with two shooting target dummies, the shape, skin tone and bald heads of which Humphries resembles quite closely.

“That picture was sent years before Ms. Kelley contacted him about this,” Lawrence Berger, the general counsel for the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association, previously said. “It was sent as part of a larger context of what I would call social relations in which the families would exchange numerous photos of each other.”

The report of the shirtless photo in the case led many officials to believe there had been inappropriate contact between Kelley — the woman who tipped investigators off to the Petraeus affair — and Humphries.

Paula Broadwell, Petraeus’ biographer and the woman he had an affair with, sent threatening messages to Kelley, warning her to stay away from Petreaus.

Broadwell believed Kelley was getting too close to the ex-CIA director.

Eventually, the nature of the messages led Kelley to tell FBI investigators what Broadwell, operating under the screen name KelleyPatrol, had been up to. This would lead investigators to discover secret email conversations between Petraeus and Broadwell, uncovering their years-long relationship and raising questions about national security. As a result, Petraeus would eventually step down from his high-ranking post.
