Officers shot and killed the suspect, a lawyer, after a Houston shooting Monday morning that injured nine people at a shopping center.

Authorities told KTRK-TV they received a report of gunfire at 6:29 a.m. and found a suspect "firing actively" when they arrived. The suspect was killed at the scene after officers returned fire.

Of those injured in the shooting, one person was listed in critical condition and another person was in listed in serious condition, reported the television station. Three of the injured were treated and released.

Three of the victims were taken to Southwest Memorial Hospital with another transported to Ben Taub General Hospital, stated the Houston Chronicle, which reported two more patients were taken to Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center.

The Chronicle reported the shooting lasted for about 20 minutes.

Authorities did not identify the attorney but said they did not believe that another shooter was involved.

According to witnesses at the scene, the lawyer allegedly shot at numerous vehicles passing through a condominium complex near Houston's West University Place community, wrote The Associated Press. Authorities reported a number of vehicles were found with bullet holes and shattered windows at the shopping center's parking lot.

"As I was driving by Law Street I suddenly heard a big explosion," witness Eduardo Andrade, 42, told the Houston Chronicle. "I covered myself, accelerated and tried to get out of there. I did not know if someone was following me or trying to shoot me."

The Chronicle said Andrade's vehicle was hit twice by bullets, one through the windshield and another through the front passenger window.

"I felt the hot air," Andrade told newspaper. "It's so random, think of it, if I was driving a little faster or a little slower, the bullet would have had a different trajectory."

Houston mayor Sylvester Turner, who is on a trade mission trip to Cuba, told KTRK that the shooter was "either fired or had a bad relationship with this law firm."

"The investigation is active. It's very, very early," Turner said, per the television station and The Associated Press. "We want to make sure there is no other gunman. We are checking every angle, I can assure you."
