Former horse of the year Charismatic, winner of the Kentucky Derby and Preakness in 1999, has died at the Old Friends Equine thoroughbred retirement farm in Georgetown, Kentucky.

Charismatic just fell short of the Triple Crown, coming in third in the Belmont Stakes after suffering a broken leg, said the Lexington Herald-Leader. Lemon Drop Kid went on to win that race.

Born in 1996, Charismatic was trained by D. Wayne Lukas, and was named the Eclipse 1999 Horse of the Year even though the broken leg ended its racing career, noted the Louisville Courier-Journal.

Old Friends made the announcement on its Facebook page Sunday.

Charismatic had five wins, two places, four shows in 17 starts while earning $2,038,064, said the Herald-Leader. Charismatic's then sired Summer Squall, the winner of the 1990 Preakness Stakes.

Blood Horse reported that Charismatic died Sunday from a hemorrhage caused by a broken pelvis.

Charismatic had been standing stud in Japan since 2002 and returned from the JBBA Shizunai Stallion Station there to the United States on Dec. 3.

"Right now, everyone is pretty much inconsolable," Old Friends president Michael Blowen said in a statement Sunday. "Last night, at 6:30, he was fine. He was a really tough horse and he deserved a much longer retirement. But none of us, unfortunately, has a magic wand. Everyone at Old Friends takes solace from the few great months that this great Champion gave us."
