The 2018 Honda Civic Type R has set the speed record for front wheel drive production cars at Germany’s Nurburgring Nordschleife race track, making it the fastest car of its type to date.

The previous record was held by the Volkswagon GTI Clubsport, but the new Civic Type R beat that record by 5.5 seconds, completing the lap in 7 minutes 43.8 seconds.

Before the GTI, the last generation Civic Type R had the record, which the newer model beat by 7 seconds.

The new Honda also took a corner of the track at 99 mph when the average is 93, Jalopnik reported.

Honda used a “pre-production model that was technically representative of production specification” for the test. The driver was encased in a roll cage for safety reasons, but the extra weight of the cage was offset by taking out the rear seats and audio system, Jalopnik reported.

Honda claimed the improved lap time is because of increased power (10-bhp increase to 316), greater structural rigidity, and a wider track, as well as an advanced suspension and chassis tuning, Top Gear reported.

Some, including this Twitter commenter, though, credited racetrack tires for the record, saying they could make a 20-second difference.

Another Twitter user bemoaned the hefty price tag of the Type R.

And a few more chimed in on the tires.
