A 70-year-old veteran says he was fired from a Texas Home Depot after trying to stop shoplifters from getting away with thousands of dollars in merchandise.

U.S. Army veteran Jim Tinney said that on instinct, he threw a paint roller extension at the feet of a group of men who tried to walk out of the store with tool sets worth thousands of dollars, KTRK reported. The men got away anyway, but two weeks later, Tinney was fired.

Home Depot has a strict policy against engaging with shoplifters. Tinney said he remembers learning about the policy in his training, but wasn’t thinking about that when he acted in the moment.

“In the Army, they train you to do things like that,” Tinney told KTRK.

Home Depot defended its policy.

“We’ve had deaths and serious injury over the years, and no amount of merchandise is more important than the safety of our associates and customers,” spokesman Stephen Holmes said in a statement, KTRK reported. Holmes added that just in the previous 24 hours, two different Home Depot locations had been held up at gunpoint and that employees had been stabbed and bitten by would-be thieves.

Tinney says he needed the job and doesn’t understand why he was fired.

“I think they could have written me up, reprimanded me. But terminate me? That’s pretty strong,” he told the news station.

Tinney says he’s having trouble finding another job.

“I enjoyed working with customers figuring out what they wanted to do. It’s fun,” he added.

Twitter users took both sides on the issue, with some agreeing with the veteran and some Home Depot.
