Helen Mirren, Subway Queen: Dame Shows Riders Proper Etiquette

By    |   Monday, 02 Feb 2015 05:05 PM

Dame Helen Mirren showed New York’s subway riders the appropriate way to conduct themselves on the train, a timely reminder given the recent focus on rude subway behavior.

The Instagram photo of Mirren, looking classy, popped up over the weekend.

Bad habits, like clipping your nails on the subway, or spreading your legs out so people won’t sit near you — aka "manspreading" — have come under scrutiny lately after the Metropolitan Transit Authority launched a new courtesy campaign.

The "Courtesy Counts, Manners Make a Better Ride" campaign takes a clever take on subway behaviors, asking “Dude, stop the spread, please,” and “Don’t be a pole hog,” referring to people who lean against the train poles so that other people can't hold on.

With her purse squarely on her lap and her knees together, Mirren was the model of a polite subway rider.

The fact that she rides the subway garnered attention, but that’s been happening for some time. People have randomly posted pictures or tweets saying they were pretty sure Mirren was on their subway car.
