HBO to Develop Sequel to GOP-Bashing Film 'Game Change'

HBO has plans for a made-for-cable movie sequel to “Game Change,” which will be adapted from a follow-up book written by “Game Change” authors Mark Halperin and John Heilemann.

The cable network will reportedly adapt for the small screen Halperin and Heilemann's yet to-be-released book “Double Down: Game Change 2012.”

The upcoming book purportedly focuses on the recent 2012 presidential election that had former Massachusetts governor and GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney challenging Democrat incumbent President Barack Obama.

HBO previously aired a movie adapted from “Game Change,” which claimed to be a recounting of the selection by then-GOP presidential nominee John McCain of his vice presidential running mate, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, and incidents that occurred during the 2008 contest between Obama and McCain.

Actor Ed Harris portrayed McCain in the HBO movie while actress Julianne Moore played Palin.

HBO subsequently rushed to option the rights to Halperin and Heilemann's follow-up book.

Although “Game Change” won five Emmy Awards in early 2012, many Republicans criticized the book and film for the negative portrayals of McCain and Palin.

McCain had appeared on “Fox News Sunday” earlier this year and admitted that he hadn’t seen the film but knew about the contents of the book.

“I'm not going to watch it,” McCain said. “It's based on a book that’s completely biased and with unattributed quotes.”

Penguin Press announced it will publish the sequel to the 2010 “Game Change” book in the fall of 2013.

“John Heilemann and Mark Halperin reinvented the campaign narrative with Game Change,” Penguin's Ann Godoff said in a release issued by Penguin. “Their new book, Double Down, will, of course, break news. But more importantly, it will create the lasting story of the 2012 race for the presidency.”
