A sinkhole opened up on a road in Hawaii on Monday and sucked in a truck and driver, who luckily was able to climb out safely.

Driver Velma Deluz said her ribs were injured but she was just glad to be alive.

“When I made the turn the road just sucked me right in and I just fell in and I tried to climb out through the window because it fell on its side," Deluz told Hawaii News Now.

There had been heavy rains in the area and the road passed over a culvert, HNN said.

The sinkhole occurred on a road near Paauilo, Hawaii, and Big Island Video News reported that about 100 people were stranded in the area because the road with the sinkhole was the main way in and out.

The truck was removed from the hole, which has continued to grow, Big Island News said.

The storm that moved in over the weekend brought torrential rains and flooding to Hawaii.

Hawaii residents went online to post flood and rain pictures and warned people to be careful. HNN reported that a possible microtornado blew two-thirds of the roof off a house during the storm.

“HFD personnel moved all salvageable items to the remaining one third of home which still had the roof attached,” HNN reported from fire officials. “Two occupants were at home at the time, with one sustaining minor injuries.”

West Hawaii Today reported that the storm broke a few records as it flooded roads and homes. Around Hilo, 7.51 inches of rain in a 24-hour time period broke the original record of 4.58 inches. Even more impressive was 20.46 inches of rain reported in Waiakea Uka from 10 a.m. Sunday to 8 a.m. Tuesday.
