Haji Imam, an ISIS leader in Syria considered the group’s second in command, has been killed, U.S. officials announced Friday.

"We are systematically eliminating ISIL's cabinet," Defense Secretary Ash Carter said at a press conference, according to CNN.

Also known as Abd al-Rahman Muhammad Mustafa al-Qaduli, he was the second ISIS leader successfully targeted this month.

Al-Qaduli was the group’s finance minister, and his elimination is significant to the group’s ability to hire and pay recruits.

"We're certainly gathering momentum and we're seeing that that momentum is having an effect," Carter said.

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Gen. Joseph Dunford added, however, "By no means would I say that we're about to break the back of ISIL or that the fight is over."

Al-Qaduli, who went by 12 aliases, including Haji Imam, was reported killed in July, but that claim was later revealed to be inaccurate, CNN reported. He was labeled as "a specially designated global terrorist" in 2014, and the U.S. State Department had offered a $7 million reward for information on him.

The Pentagon also confirmed the earlier killing of Omar al-Shishani, NBC News reported.

Al-Qaduli managed the day-to-day operations for ISIS, but officials couldn’t confirm whether he was directly involved in attacks in Brussels and Paris.

A special unit of American commandos has been working with local forces in Iraq since arriving there earlier this year, The New York Times reported. American special forces also have been working in Syria.

Twitter users had mixed reactions to the news.
