Pro-gun activist Jamie Gilt told police she was accidentally shot in the back by her 4-year-old son who was sitting in the backseat while they were hauling a horse trailer in central Florida.

Jamie Gilt, 31, of Jacksonville, was hospitalized after the incident while her son was in the care of relatives, reported the Florida Times-Union.

Gilt was driving down Florida State Road 20 in Palatka on Tuesday afternoon with her son sitting in the back seat of a four-door pickup truck when she was shot. The bullet struck Gilt in the back and went through the front of her torso.

A pickup truck with a horse trailer attached to the back and a wounded Gilt inside was found stopped partially in the travel lane. A Putnam County sheriff's deputy had stopped to check on the vehicle when he discovered Gilt had been shot, said WTLV-TV.

Gilt was rushed to the University of Florida Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville where she was treated.

Investigators said the weapon found inside the truck, a loaded 45-caliber handgun, was legally owned by Gilt but it wasn't clear how the child got hold of it.

Gilt maintains a Facebook page called Jamie Gilt for Gun Sense where she advocates for gun rights and protecting the Second Amendment, according to the Gainesville Sun. She posted a message on March 7 that read: "Even my 4 year old gets jacked up to target shoot with the .22."

Gilt's Facebook page was unavailable on Thursday.

Putnam County Sheriff Capt. Joseph Wells told the Times-Union that no charges were filed against Gilt and the State Attorney's Office will determine if Gilt will be charged, depending on how the boy obtained the weapon.

CNN said it is a misdemeanor in Florida to store or leave a loaded firearm where a child could gain access to it.
