Ground Zero Wedding Photo Goes Viral, Is Finally Returned to Owner

By    |   Monday, 15 Sep 2014 07:05 PM

A university professor’s search for the owner of a wedding photo found near Ground Zero after 9/11 ended last week with good news — she found the owner, and all six of the people in the photo are alive.

For 13 years, Elizabeth Stringer Keefe put a picture of the crumpled, torn photo out on social media, asking if anyone knew who the people in the joyful wedding picture were. This year, it went viral and she finally got an answer.

Fred Mahe, who worked at the time on the 77th floor of the second tower, contacted Keefe after seeing the wedding photo and told her it sat on his desk, Boston magazine said. He was not at work yet when the planes flew into the towers.

Mahe told Boston magazine that the photo was taken during a friend’s Colorado wedding, and it was lost in the rubble after the towers fell.

On Monday, Keefe told NECN that she knew this year was going to be different when she watched the photo go viral after she posted it.

"I think a half an hour later, I knew it was going to happen," she said. "It was so exciting. I start to tear up when I think about it. It started to go viral, so I stayed up all night and just watched."

Mahe, who now lives in Colorado, sent her a message when he saw the photo. “I know the people in this photo. Give me a call,” Keefe told NECN. She did, and he said, “You are awesome,” when she introduced herself.

"On 9/11, like you, I saw the worst of humanity. The absolute worst. But on 9/12, I saw the best," Mahe told NECN. "And the photo mystery was solved on 9/12."

Mahe and Keefe met for the first time Monday in New York, NECN said. A reporter tweeted a photo of the two together:
