Groom, 6 Guests Arrested After Brawl at a Wedding Reception

The groom and six other people were arrested after a wedding reception in Pennsylvania turned into a brawl and police arriving at the scene were threatened. It wasn't known if the two woman arrested were bridesmaids.

Authorities told WFMZ-TV that alcohol played a role in the brawl that landed groom Nicholas Papoutsis in jail on his wedding day. Papoutsis challenged Northern Berks Regional Police officers to a fight when they arrived at the reception in Onatelaunee Township last Saturday and then refused to back down.

"For the bride and groom I'm not sure how that's going to work out for them in the end," said Police Chief Scott Eaken. "When we arrived we initially found one individual that was bleeding and was somewhat belligerent, and he was taken into custody right away."

The ruckus began when a reception guest, Mandi Groh, was approached by another guest because Groh's 14-year-old son was allegedly drunk.

"The mother of this child ended up punching that woman in the face," Eaken told WFMZ-TV. "Another person saw this and came over to intervene and he was also punched in the face by the mother."

Doug Mehrkam, owner of Blue Falls Grove where the reception was held, said he called police after seeing things quickly spiral out of control, with a dozen intoxicated people pushing and shoving each other.

"I just saw three groups separating and fighting, and at that point I realized I needed some help," said Mehrkam.

Eaken told the Reading Eagle that four officers – two officers from Northern Berks Regional and two from Muhlenberg Township – were taken to Reading Hospital for treatment of minor injuries suffered while trying to break up the brawl.

"Several people were trying to be a calming influence in all of this but at this point alcohol had taken over," said Eaken.

Northern Berks Officer Sean Showalter wrote in an affidavit that he directly confronted Papoutsis, trying to calm him down.

"I tried reasoning with him, telling him that he didn't really want to get arrested on his wedding night," Showalter wrote, but Papoutsis continued to challenge officers and was arrested.
