Doctors Remove Metal Grill Brush Bristle From Woman's Intestine

A Connecticut woman complaining of stomach pain was rushed to the hospital earlier this month and doctors later removed a metal grill brush bristle from her intestines.

Cheryl Harrison, of Wallingford, was taken to MidState Medical Center two days after consuming a burger cooked on a grill, according to WTNH.com. A CT scan showed there was a foreign object in her body and, during emergency surgery, doctors removed a metal piece of a grill brush about an inch long.

“Obviously, if it was in my mouth and I bit it, I wouldn’t have swallowed it,” she told the station. “It must have been positioned in that burger just perfect, and I ingested it and swallowed it.”

Fortunately for the 52-year-old, she had it removed before it caused major problems.

“In the case of some patients, when they arrive at the level of a small bowel, you have kind of a kink, a right angle, and it does not negotiate as well, and at that time it makes a hole in the intestine,” Dr. Aziz Benbrahim told WTNH.

Benbrahim said the puncture has the potential to become life-threatening. Last year, he performed a similar surgery on a 50-year-old man, Fox Connecticut reported.

“He was very sick for a few days and then he had blood clots in his lungs, so it was really really life-threatening but he recovered well,” Benbrahim said.

As for Harrison, she's warning people to carefully inspect their food after grilling out.

“Visually check to see if any bristles hanging out or stuck on the grill. You just really don’t want that to happen to you,” she told Fox Connecticut.
