Greedo Catfish Has a Certain Bug-Eyed 'Star Wars' Look

A bug-eyed, puckered-mouth catfish has become a movie star, sort of, because it resembles the "Star Wars" bounty hunter Greedo who Hans Solo knocks off in the original 1977 movie.

The previously unknown catfish species, with large dark eyes and protruding bristles, was first found by researchers in the Gurupi River in Brazil in 1998, according to CNN, some 21 years after Greedo confronted Harrison Ford's character in the movie while attempting to collect a debt for Jabba the Hut.

Jonathan Armbruster, biological sciences professor and curator of fishes for the Auburn University Museum of Natural History, and other Auburn scientists named the catfish Peckoltia greedoi to honor the Star Wars character, according to a statement by the university.

Armbruster said he made the connection between the catfish and the "Star Wars" character" while examining the specimen for characteristics with biological sciences colleagues David Werneke, Milton Tan and Chris Hamilton.

"Chris looked at the specimen and said 'that looks like that guy from Star Wars,'" said Armbruster. "After a little prodding, I realized he was talking about Greedo. We then knew what the name had to be. The Peckoltia greedoi does bear a striking resemblance to Greedo."

"As a 7-year-old kid, I watched Star Wars in the theater and it was a life-changing experience for me. I became a lifelong fan, and I now share that with my son. Greedo has always been a personal favorite of mine," said Armbruster.

The Greedo character became a point of contention for hardcore "Star War" fans when Lucasfilm re-released the 1997 film. The reworked film, according to CNN, showed Greedo firing a shot at Harrison Ford's character before Hans Solo returned fire, but in the original Ford fired the only shot.

A reboot of the "Star Wars" franchise, "Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens," is scheduled to hit theaters on Dec. 18, marking the return of Ford's Hans Solo and the original cast of Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher along with new cast members.
