GOP Women's Abortion Bill Opposition Kills 21st-Week Ban

Faced with growing opposition from women representatives in the party, the GOP yanked an abortion bill on Wednesday that would bar abortions after the 20th week of pregnancy.

According to The Washington Post, roughly two-dozen Republicans objected to the rape and incest exemptions, or lack thereof, contained in the "Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act."

Supporters of the bill said there was an exemption for rape victims, however victims would have to file a report with the police in order to take advantage of that exception.

Reps. Rene Ellmers of North Carolina, and Jackie Walorski of Indiana led the opposition to the bill. They were joined by many freshman and female representatives from more moderate districts.

Passage of the bill was scheduled to coincide with the annual March for Life, which brings hundreds of thousands of anti-abortion activists to the nation's capital to protest the Supreme Court's 1973 Roe v. Wade decision on its anniversary.

Instead of the late-term abortion bill, Republicans in the House have decided to pass a bill prohibiting federal tax dollars from funding abortions. The bill passed last year, and is expected to pass again this time around. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has stated support for the bill in the past, and is likely to push for its passage in the upper chamber.
