A Golden Gate Bridge suicide prevention net will take four years to build and cost $193 million, officials said as the start of construction was set to begin with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday.

The long-awaited net, which will be positioned 20 feet below the sidewalk and extend another 20 feet, is being made of stainless steel that will curve up slightly at the ends KNTV NBC Bay Area reported.

Priya Clemens, a spokeswoman for the Golden Gate Bridge Highway and Transportation District, told KNTV that 39 people died after jumping off the bridge in 2016, but bridge patrol workers prevented another 200 from committing suicide at the structure.

U.S. House of Representatives minority leader Nancy Pelosi and U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein were scheduled to be at the ribbon-cutting.

The San Francisco Chronicle wrote that transit authorities and politicians had debated the idea of a suicide net for years, but questions of cost and necessity plagued the project and slowed the idea.

Eve Meyer, executive director of San Francisco Suicide Prevention, told the Chronicle that past studies have disproven critics who complained that would-be jumpers deterred from the bridge would simply find another place to end their life.

"This project is the first of its kind, and there are many technical questions that need careful consideration," Ewa Bauer, chief engineer for the Golden Gate Bridge said in a statement last year about the project.

"The bridge is known for not only its beauty, but also its magnificent quality. We're moving as quickly as we can toward building the deterrent, but we will not gloss over critical structural details in favor of speed. We will do this right," Bauer's statement continued.

The Chronicle reported that the district first projected the cost of the suicide net at $76 million, but the cost nearly doubled when the first bids came in last year and have continued to climb.
