Is Gmail Down? Outage Hits Mail Service, Chrome; Sends Google Users Into Tizzy

Some Google users reported having issues with the search giant’s services on Monday morning, especially a Gmail outage that affected users on several continents.

Google Play, Google’s version of iTunes; Google Talk, an instant messaging service; Google Drive, a cloud storage service, Google Calendar, and its browser Chrome were also all out for a few hours Monday.

"We are currently experiencing an issue with some Google services," Google spokeswoman Andrea Freund said in a statement early on Monday afternoon. "For everyone who is affected, we apologize for any inconvenience you may be experiencing."

Google updated its apps dashboard at 12:30 p.m. to say it was working to fix the problems. Another update at 1:10 p.m. said the services were back up and running.

The company didn’t specify how many users were affected, or where, but the outage prompted widespread complaints on social media on both coasts in the U.S. and in other major markets, from the United Kingdom to Brazil.

There were reported issues with Google last week as well, as services were down for a few hours at night, but before that it has been smooth sailing for users as far back as the beginning of November, according to Web Pro News.

Google hasn’t released a statement about what caused the outages.

Tech Crunch writer Romain Dillet suggested the outages might have stemmed from a bug affecting Chrome Sync and Google’s authentication system.

Here’s a sprinkling of reaction to the outage:
