Glasgow flew the Palestine flag from its City Chambers building on Friday in a show of support "for the innocent people who are being hurt in Gaza." A critic called it "gesture politics."

Councillor Archie Graham, Depute Leader of the City Council, said in a statement posted to Twitter that the flag-raising "is not intended to show support for one side or the other in this conflict. The Lord Provost has written to the Mayor of Bethlehem, which is twinned with Glasgow, to offer condolences to the many people in the city and throughout Palestine who have been affected. We are hopeful that an immediate, enduring and peaceful resolution can be found to this conflict."

The BBC reported Thursday, however, that Paul Morron, Glasgow Jewish Representative Council president, said the organization was "angered and hurt" by the decision to raise the flag.

"Flying the flag is the worst kind of gesture politics," he said, adding that it "does nothing to alleviate the suffering on either side of the conflict, nor does it bring peace closer by one single minute."

On Friday, the flag was raised, and a small group of people rallied under it.

Residents began posting pictures of the flag almost immediately, and, once online, the pictures proved divisive. Many supported the move, while many deplored it.
