Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani
, who led the emergency response to the Sept. 11 attacks, said Wednesday that President Barack Obama should release the photos of Osama bin Laden’s dead body.
Speaking at a homeland security conference in Grand Rapids, Mich., the potential Republican presidential candidate, said such a move would satisfy the vast majority of doubters about the terrorist mastermind’s death, The Grand Rapids Press reported Thursday.
"I believe if I were making the decision, I would release them," he said. "I realize the risk in that. It can incite violence."
Giuliani added he believes the country is better off "getting all the facts out now."
"The reality is the pictures are eventually going to get out. Why not put them out now," he concluded.
Giuliani was scheduled to speak Thursday at the Great Lakes Homeland Security conference in Grand Rapids, but moved up his appearance to Wednesday because he plans to be in New York as President Obama meets with families of Sept. 11 victims.
On Wednesday, Obama said he did not plan to release the photos because it could further incite terrorists.
Giuliani talked about the upcoming 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks, and the need to be vigilant. "I do know (the anniversary) is going to be somewhat easier due to the fact our government was able to get bin Laden," he said.
"He was a very powerful presence," he said. "But we have to be very alert right now that something might happen.”
