Girl Scout Shot in Drive-By Asks 'What Did I Do Wrong?'

A 9-year-old selling Girl Scout cookies was shot in the leg during an apparent drive-by in Indianapolis on Tuesday.

Sinai Miller had just stepped outside her apartment to sell cookies when the shots were fired, the Indianapolis Star reported.

Miller and one of her sisters were standing outside the apartment door while her mother, Shanita Miller, was inside zipping up another daughter’s coat. When the shots sounded, Shanita Miller pushed her two daughters inside as Sinai Miller raced through the door on her own.

Within moments, Sinai Miller was yelling, “Mama, mama, mama. It hurt. It hurt. It hurt,” according to the Star.

The girl's leg was covered in blood, but doctors were able to determine that the bullet entered and exited her calf causing no major damage. She was treated and released from the hospital.

“What did I do wrong?" Sinai reportedly asked her family later. "Why did this happen?"

Mark Chandler, Shanita Miller’s boyfriend, told Fox 59, “I came downstairs and she was sitting over there and that’s her little boot and the blood. It’s just ridiculous. She’s 9 years old, man. She’s very smart. She don’t know nothing about no gun or no shots or whatever.”

Witnesses told police they saw someone stick an arm out of an SUV and fire the shots, the Star said, but no suspects have been identified.

A neighbor told Fox 59 that such a shooting is unusual in their neighborhood.

“The type of community this is, it’s kid friendly and for this to happen sparingly with no direction, they was just shooting,” Tamera Williams told the station.

Fox published a link to the Girl Scout website where people can buy cookies from Sinai Miller.
