Giant Crack: Earth Mysteriously Splits Along Highway 26 in Mexico

By    |   Monday, 25 Aug 2014 08:34 AM

A giant crack in the Earth cut Highway 26 in the Mexican city of Hermosillo in half last week, making the road impassable and leaving locals and public officials puzzled as to what exactly caused the fissure.

The trench in the northern part of the state of Sonora appears to be 26 feet deep and about 16 feet wide at various places, according to video footage taken from a drone by Hermosillo Desde El Cielo. News.com reported that geologists at the University of Sonora believe the land collapsed because of an underground stream.

Mexican newspaper Expreso reported that rainfall in the area also helped open the crack, but officials said residents shouldn't be alarmed, The Huffington Post noted.

"It's definitely not a cause for alarm for the population," Martin Valencia Moreno, head of the National Autonomous University of Mexico's Regional Station of the Geological Institute, told the Excelsior newspaper, according to The Post. "It's more something sensationalist and people like to encourage that sort of thing."

Moreno said there is evidence that suggests the trench was not caused by an earthquake.

"When a fault is generated the levels generally move and here we see people walking on both sides of the trench, the two levels are still in place, one side isn't raised and the other hasn't sunk either," he told Excelsior.

News of the trench in Mexico spread over the weekend as California suffered the strongest earthquake in more than two decades Sunday in Napa Valley, according to CNN.

The 6.0-magnitude tremor injured dozens of people, damaging buildings downtown and threatening California's famed wine country.
