Man Pretending to Be Ghost at Cemetery Arrested, Fined for Behavior

A British man pretending to be a ghost and disrupting a cemetery has been fined for behavior that "was likely to cause distress."

Anthony Stallard, 24, was goofing off with a friend in Kingston Cemetery, Portsmouth, after he’d been out drinking, the Portsmouth News reported. While kicking a football around, he made ghost-like sounds and disturbed others visiting the graves.

“While the football was going on they were shouting and this defendant was effectively singing loudly and being disrespectful in among the graves,” the News quoted prosecutor Tim Concannon. “He was throwing himself backwards, waving his arms about and going ‘wooooooo.’ I’m assuming he was pretending to be a ghost.”

Stallard pleaded guilty to the charge at an earlier hearing after admitting that his behavior may have upset people at the cemetery.

“He has accepted that his behavior, if it had been outside of a cemetery would not have been inappropriate, but inside a cemetery while people are grieving for their loved ones it might be,” his defense attorney Denise Saunders told the News. “He is apologetic as demonstrated by his early guilty plea.”

She also told the News that Stallard is being tested for autism.

Despite the subject matter in the story, the Internet community couldn’t resist laughing at the idea of someone pretending to be a ghost and getting arrested for the behavior.

“I know this was serious but I couldn't help laughing,” one person wrote on a Daily Mail story.

But others were concerned about those who might have been grieving in the cemetery.

“I actually laughed at the headline & thought the police had no sense of humor, then read about him kicking a football around the cemetery changed my mind, disrespectful little little thug who should be out looking for work instead & should hang his head in shame,” another commenter wrote.
