'Ghost Hunters' Alcatraz Redux: Tourist Snaps Haunting Image

A photograph of a ghostly woman in the window of an Alcatraz cell block caught by a British couple in April has made a believer of them, the same way the abandoned prison has haunted the TV show  "Ghost Hunters."

English teaching assistant Sheila Sillery-Walsh, 48, took the photo on her iPhone 5c when she toured the long-closed prison in San Francisco Bay with her partner Paul Rice, according to the Daily Mail in a story posted Tuesday.

"Everything felt very eerie," Sillery-Walsh told the Daily Mail. "I didn't feel comfortable there. Whilst doing an audio-tour of the place, I casually stopped to take a snap of the empty visitation block window on my iPhone. When I glanced at the photo on my mobile, I saw this dark female figure in the picture. I looked at the window again and there was no-one in the room."

"I knew straight away that the woman in the photo was a ghost and showed the snap to Paul. From that point onwards, I wasn't interested in the Alcatraz tour anymore. I just kept looking at the picture over and over again," said Sillery-Walsh.

Alcatraz, which sits in the middle of San Francisco Bay, was a maximum high-security federal prison that held some of the country's most notorious criminals from 1934 to 1963. The prison is now part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The Daily Mail reported that Alcatraz officials have publicly dismissed reports of ghosts at the site.

Alcatraz was featured in the sixth season of Syfy's "Ghost Hunters" series. The series said the prison has a long history of paranormal activity.

"Today, people have reported hearing gunfire and weeping in that same area," wrote "Ghost Hunters" on its webpage about Alcatraz. "In Cell Block D, or solitary confinement area, a visitor reportedly had startling physical contact with a spirit. Other reports include the apparition of a prisoner with glaring red eyes. In the Citadel, or dungeon, people have been heard screaming. And in the hospital area, the ghost of notorious prisoner Robert Straud, a.k.a. the Birdman of Alcatraz, is often spotted roaming the area."
