Germany’s 7-1 defeat of Brazil during the World Cup on Tuesday led to a record for most tweets ever about a sporting event with 35.6 million tweets, beating the previous record of 24.9 million tweets set by this year's Super Bowl.

The game also set a record for tweets per minute: 580,166 after German midfielder Sami Khedira scored the team’s fifth goal in the game’s 29th minute, USA Today said.

Twitter Data posted about the record tweets and about the players who were mentioned most.

Twitter also created a heat map to track tweets during the game.

The game broke other records as well. It equaled the worst loss in Brazil's World Cup history (when they lost 6-0 to Uruguay in 1920) and the biggest World Cup semifinal scoreline ever.

The Guardian said the record number of Germany-Brazil tweets also illustrates growth of the social media network.

Some other Twitter data highlighted by The Guardian included Usain Bolt's gold-medal 200m sprint, which brought 80,000 tweets per minute, Barack Obama's Democratic National Convention acceptance speech, which brought 52,756 tweets per minute, and Beyonce’s 2013 Super Bowl halftime show, which got 268,000 tweets per minute.
