Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal signed a gun measure Thursday that will allow guns on campus in a move conservatives and Second Amendment activists have wanted for some time.

Deal signed the “campus carry” bill to enable students and others with gun permits to carry concealed firearms onto public college and university campuses, which some expect will bring about safer campus environments because students and faculty members will now be able to better protect themselves, according to AJC.com.

Deal’s explanation for signing the bill was that he wanted students to feel safe when traveling in areas on campuses that are considered to be “dangerous territory.”

"At the present time, assailants can, and do, target these students knowing full well that their victims are not permitted to carry protection," Deal said, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported, "even those who are weapons carry license holders, because they are either going to or coming from a campus where no weapons are allowed."

The new law will go into effect in July.

Deal said last year he believed it was “highly questionable” that the bill would make students or campuses safer, but gun rights activists disagreed, claiming that a measure like this was important.

Lawmakers later included additional details in the measure that would keep people from legally carrying concealed guns into “on-campus child care facilities, faculty and administrative offices, dormitories, and disciplinary meetings.”

That’s when Deal’s feelings about the bill changed.

Despite the new legislation, many have criticized it, claiming it will lead to more murders and suicides.

“This flip-flop will be what Georgians remember about our governor for years to come – that he bent to the Washington gun lobby,” said Lindsey Donovan, leader iof the Georgia chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, the AJC reported. “This will be the legacy he leaves behind.”
