Former President George W. Bush resisted mentioning current President Donald Trump by name but praised Jimmy Kimmel’s anti-Trump Oscars monologue as “damn good” in an appearance on Kimmel’s late-night TV show.

Bush stopped short of slamming Trump himself, but laughed at several comments Kimmel made about the president, saying that he loved humor, “and the best humor is when you make fun of yourself.”

“Tell that to the president,” Kimmel retorted, but Bush went on to discuss his knack for inventing or misusing words like “strategery” and “misunderestimate.”

When Kimmel brought up Trump’s frequent media-bashing, Bush said that he didn’t even watch television when he was in office. “You’re pretty busy, there’s plenty to do,” he said. He also said he enjoyed attending the White House Correspondents' Dinner, which Trump boycotted, and used it to poke fun at himself.

Bush’s brother Jeb was an early opponent of Trump in the Republican primary, and the Bush family did not support or endorse Donald Trump when he became the Republican nominee.

When asked if his father, former President George H.W. Bush, was really sick on inauguration day or just didn’t want to attend, Bush just laughed.

“It was a serious question,” Kimmel insisted, but got no answer.

The former president promoted his new book while on the show, which contained his original paintings of veterans. Bush took up painting after leaving office and has pledged to donate the proceeds of “Portraits of Courage” to his nonprofit veterans charity, according to the book’s Amazon description.

Some "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" viewers seemed amazed on Twitter that they actually felt warmly toward former President Bush eight years after he left office.
