George and Barbara Bush's appearance at the Super Bowl coin toss was greeted with a rousing ovation not only from the fans but the New England Patriots and Atlanta Falcons players as well.

President Bush, America's oldest living former president at 92, was released from a Houston hospital a week ago after suffering from pneumonia but took to the field at NRG Stadium in his wheelchair on Sunday for the Super Bowl coin toss, said USA Today.

He was joined by wife, former first lady Barbara Bush, who followed in a golf cart. She eventually stood behind the president as he made the coin toss. Barbara Bush was hospitalized as well for a brief time as well before the Super Bowl.

The captains from both teams applauded the Bushes and shook President Bush's hand after the coin toss was complete.

Jim McGrath, the Bush family spokesman, told the Houston Chronicle on Saturday that the Bushes wanted to keep their invitation by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell for the coin toss.

"President Bush is the most goal-oriented person you can meet," McGrath said, per the Chronicle. "When he sets a goal out there on the horizon, it's almost like he wills himself to achieve it.

"They feel great. They've been taking it easy since they've both been discharged from the hospital – saving up their strength. They're just fired up and didn't want to overexert themselves and risk not being able to make it. They're so focused on this and so proud of their hometown."

President Bush, who served two terms as vice president under President Ronald Regan before serving one term as president from 1989 to 1993, is a local sports fans who has regularly attended Houston Texans and Houston Astros games, said the Chronicle.

Many cheered on the Bushes on social media.
