Gas Platform Fire Destroys Barracks But No One Hurt Off Alaska

An offshore natural gas platform caught fire in Alaska’s Cook Inlet Thursday, and although no injuries were reported, the barracks were completely destroyed.

Four people on the platform were safely evacuated, KTUU said.

The Peninsula Clarion reported that the fire on Hilcorp Alaska LLC’s Baker platform was still smoldering in the late afternoon Thursday, but it was under control.

Ocean Marine Services, a company hired by Hilcorp to fight the fire, had three vessels onsite using sea water to fight the fire, KTUU said.

A report from the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation said no spill occurred as a result of the fire.

“According to Hilcorp there is a maximum capacity of approximately 10,000 gallons of petroleum products on the platform. As of 11:30 a.m. on scene responders report no discharge of petroleum product into Cook Inlet,” the report said.

The natural gas well and the pipeline infrastructure were reported to be secure.

Rigzone reported the platform was located about 7 miles from shore in Cook Inlet. The cause of the fire was unknown and being investigated.

The Coast Guard sent helicopters to fly over the platform and also sent cutters to the scene, Rigzone said.

“Our goal is to mitigate any potential risk to the environment,” Commander Shane Montoya, the Coast Guard Federal On-Scene Coordinator and acting Coast Guard Sector Anchorage commander, told Rigzone. “We will work closely with all parties involved to establish a unified command.”
