By Greg McDonald   |   Monday, 22 Aug 2011 02:08 PM

Rep. Mike Rogers said Monday the United States must move as quickly as possible to ensure that Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi’s stockpile of advanced, chemical, and other weapons “don’t fall into the wrong hands.”

The Michigan Republican, who chairs the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, made the statement as rebels stormed into the in the Libyan capital of Tripoli, signaling the apparent end to the Gadhafi regime.

“As it becomes increasingly apparent in Libya that the regime is falling apart, we must continue to act to protect our U.S. national security interests,” Rogers said. “It is as important now as before. We can be proud of the role the United States and its allies have played. This demonstrates again that substantive action by the United States can make a critical difference in the struggle against dictatorship and oppression.”

But Rogers added, “This is not over yet. Even after [Gadhafi] is out of power we will have to step up and lead to ensure U.S. national security interests are safeguarded. In particular, we must ensure that [Gadhafi’s] stockpiles of advanced weapons, chemical weapons and explosives don't fall into the wrong hands.”
