Fredricka Whitfield Apologizes for Calling Dallas Gunman Brave

By    |   Monday, 15 Jun 2015 06:14 AM

Saying she "misspoke," CNN weekend anchor Fredricka Whitfield apologized on Sunday for comments she made a day earlier calling a gunman who attacked the Dallas Police Department "courageous and brave,"

The controversy began Saturday when CNN was reporting on an incident that day in which James Boulware allegedly attacked Dallas Police headquarters in an armored van, Authorities eventually killed Boulware in a standoff, reported WFAA-TV.

Whitfield was discussing the incident with a CNN analyst, according to Variety, when she said about the gunman: "It was very courageous and brave, if not crazy as well, to open fire on the police headquarters, and now you have this scene, this standoff."

That statement brought a wave of criticism on social media.

The comment brought a call from the Fort Worth Police Officers Association, asking her apologize.

Whitfield issued a brief statement Sunday during the stint as anchor.

"During a segment on the Dallas Police Department attack, I used the words 'courageous and brave' when discussing the gunman," said Whitfield. "I misspoke and in no way believe the gunman was courageous, nor brave."

Joe Concha of Mediaite.com said CNN and Whitfield failed the basics of damage control by allowing the controversy to grow on social media for a day before addressing it, making it more difficult to reel it back in.

"Outside of one Joan Rivers interview that went sideways, it's hard to find anything controversial during Whitfield's 20 years in national news," Concha wrote. "But it's the unforced error that made this story much bigger than it had to be. CNN, Whitfield and her producer (were) all asleep at the wheel. And during naptime, they didn't get out in front of the story… making it a very needlessly long 24 hours for Fredricka Whitfield indeed."
