France Anorexic Models: Country Considers Ban of Super-Skinny Models

France's health minister said Monday the French government is likely to support a bill that bans anorexic-looking models, as well as fining and jailing those who hire extremely thin models.

French Health Minister Marisol Touraine hopes her country will align with Italy, Spain, and Israel, which in 2013 adopted laws against excessively skinny models on catwalks or in ad campaigns.

"It's important for fashion models to say that they need to eat well and take care of their health, especially for young women who look to the models as an aesthetic ideal," Touraine told BFM TV on Monday, according to Reuters.

France's stance may be part of a growing trend to feature models that are more representative of the average woman, who wears a size 14. Sports Illustrated's annual swimsuit edition, which came out last month, included size-12 model Robyn Lawley, and an ad featuring plus-size model Ashley Graham.

Supermodel Kate Upton is also known for her curves rather than a waif-like appearance.

In France, major health legislation is scheduled for debate in parliament Tuesday, with the government likely to push through two weight-related items for models. Regular weight checks would be enforced and fines of up to $79,000 for any infractions — as well as up to six months in prison for offenders — were being considered, lawmaker and author of the amendments, Olivier Veran, told French daily newspaper Le Parisien, according to Reuters.

In 2007, 28-year-old Isabelle Caro, a former French fashion model, died after posing for a campaign to raise awareness about anorexia.
