Flagstaff: Explosion at Nestle Purina Plant Injures 4 in Arizona

Four people were injured Sunday evening when a Nestle Purina plant in Flagstaff, Arizona, exploded during a welding operation.

Flagstaff fire department spokesperson Capt. Matt Smyers told the Arizona Republic that fine particles in the air from making Purina products contributed to the flash explosion.

“There was a welding operation taking place inside the tower. Fuel, heat, oxygen all mixes together with these fine particles that have a lot of surface area and those fine particles can flash — more than an explosion (it) was a quick flash, a quick fire, that created a large concussion,” he told the Republic.

The large concussion blew off the doors inside the building, including doors on the outside that were big garage-type doors, Smyers said.

The Republic said one person was released from the hospital but two of the victims had serious burns and were being transferred to a burn unit.

Smyers said the Nestle Purina management pre-planned what to do in these types of situations and that made a tremendous difference.

“It could have been a lot worse than it was if they weren’t prepared (with) a good exit strategy,” Smyers told the Republic. “We give them kudos.”

In a statement reported by the Arizona Daily Sun, Nestle said its team would be working with authorities to determine the cause of the explosion, although it did seem to be tied to grain dust particles and a welding operation.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the four contractors who were injured,” factory manager Amy Kerr said in the release. “A team from our St. Louis headquarters will be at the plant today to help assess damage as we formulate a plan to safely resume operations.”

The Daily Sun said about 250 people work at the plant.
