#FirstDateSelfie Now How You Share Moments From First Date

It's the newest trend in dating. Couples meeting for the first time are taking selfies to mark the occasion and using the hashtag #FirstDateSelfie to keep and share the moment.

"Just like your romance, you could say it all begins with the #firstdateselfie, an alternative to saving movie ticket stubs, dried flowers, or even the receipt or wine-stained napkin from your first dinner out," wrote Alex Ronin of New York magazine.

"Then there are 'relfies' (relationship selfies), photos of you and your significant other that may indicate greater relationship satisfaction, but also practically guarantee everyone else will hate you," wrote Ronin.

Users of the hashtag and photos said it is a way to make their relationship public to family and friends in a quick and easy way.

"It's actually a cool way to show your commitment to a woman," Mike Tuck, 22, told New York magazine. "Like, I feel good enough about this date that I’m going to broadcast it."

The trend is helped by the use of social media among young people. A Pew Research Internet poll conducted last December reported that Twitter use was up slightly, but being used heavily by young people. The same study reported that Instagram use among 18-29 increased from 28 percent in late 2012 to 37 percent in 2013.

First date selfies can be readily found on places like Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.

Mary Stringer of Metro.com bemoaned the fact that the first date selfies have become so popular and longs for the good old days of dating.

"Unfortunately we're all guilty of selfie narcissism," Stringer said in her article. "Why take a picture of a beautiful building or landscape when you could get half of your own face in it? Why not add a dash of levity to your trip to Auschwitz-Birkenau with a grinning selfie by the gas chamber? And see if you can get a few fingernail wall-gouges in the background for extra atmosphere, yeah?"
