Filipino Appliances for Pacquiao Fight Should Be Off, Company Warns

An unstable electrical system has a Filipino electric company asking customers to turn off their appliances so residents in the area can watch the upcoming fight between hometown hero Manny Pacquiao and the undefeated Floyd Mayweather.

Palaway Electric Cooperative secretary Rante Ramos told The Associated Press that if electric customers would shut off 15,000 refrigerators, that would be enough to allow everyone to watch the fight.

There is expected to be a power deficit of about 2 megawatts, the AP said, in an area that has been experiencing three-hour average shutdowns because of problems and maintenance on power generators in Palawan. Since appliances take up a lot of electricity, shutting them off for a bit should do the trick.

“If it is just for the Pacquiao fight, let us just leave electric fans and TVs on," Ramos told the AP. "We have waited so long for this, and now that it will happen . . . it is unacceptable not to have the opportunity to watch it."

Many malls, department stores, and hotels have already agreed to pull off the power grid and use their generators from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. during the fight, which is scheduled for Saturday.

This much-anticipated fight between eight-division world champion Pacquiao and the undefeated five-division world champion Mayweather was slow to come to fruition; negotiations between officials in both camps began in 2009.

Business Insider pulled together expert assessment on what the fight will look like, and although Mayweather is at the top of the list for bets, the website said opinions are more split than one might expect.

Ten of the sports enthusiasts/writers believe Mayweather will prevail, many by decision, while six fall on Pacquiao’s side.

The fight is generating lots of online buzz:
