Fernando Bermudez won a $4.75 million settlement from the state of New York after serving 18 years in jail for a wrongful conviction of murder.

Bermudez’s attorney Michael Lamonsoff told the New York Post that the settlement is the largest payout for a wrongful conviction in the state.

“Of course, the settlement will never erase the injustice that I experienced as an innocent man in prison for 18 and a half years,” Bermudez said in a statement, according to the Post.

Bermudez was convicted in 1991 of killing 16-year-old Raymond "Dred" Blount outside a Greenwich Village nightclub. The conviction was overturned in 2009 after witnesses admitted to having been coerced.

State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman is "committed to ensuring that those who are wrongfully convicted are compensated," The New York Times reported.

Bermudez sued New York City in 2011, saying he had been dealing with culture and emotional shock since his release.

“The technology has been so great that I’ve been overwhelmed by that alone. Not only that, just adjusting to life as a free person in terms of dealing with the anxiety,” Bermudez said, according to CBS New York.

The case against the city is pending.

Bermudez speaks internationally on behalf of the Innocence Project. He and his wife, Crystal, met while he was in prison, married in 1998 and have three children.

Other wrongful conviction settlements in the state include a $3.37 million settlement with Martin Tankleff, who served 17 years for killing his parents on Long Island, and a $3 million settlement for Jabar Collins, who served 16 years for the killing a rabbi in Brooklyn.
