FBI Shannon Maureen Conley: Colo. Teen Arrested for Attempt to Aid ISIS

By    |   Thursday, 03 Jul 2014 08:55 AM

The FBI arrested 19-year-old Shannon Maureen Conley of Denver, Colorado, in April when she attempted to board a flight to the Middle East to meet up with her jihadist boyfriend she met online.

The incident came to light after a judge ordered that court documents in her case be unsealed Wednesday. KUSA Denver reported that Conley remains in federal custody on charges of attempting to provide material support or resources to a terrorist organization, an offense that could net her 15 years in prison.

"It's a difficult time for us," her mother, Ana Conley, told CNN.

Conley, a certified nurse's aide described by those who know her as a quiet, misguided suburban girl, said she met her 32-year-old Tunisian boyfriend — simply known as "Y.M." — online. He is reported to be a member of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, or ISIS, the group that has recently conquered several cities in Iraq.

On April 8, Conley reportedly attempted to leave the country to become the man's wife and a nurse in an ISIS camp near the Turkish border in Syria, according to CNN.

Federal agents first became aware of Conley last year after a pastor and the security director at Faith Bible Chapel in Arvada, Colorado, spotted her acting suspiciously around the church.

Questioned by a local police officer, she told the detective, "I hate those people," and, "If they think I'm a terrorist, I'll give them something to think I am."

In another questioning with the FBI, she said she had joined the U.S. Army Explorers program in order to be "trained in U.S. military tactics and firearms." She intended to use that training to go overseas to "wage Jihad."

According to one affidavit, "Conley stated that she was aware that her plans were potentially illegal and she could possibly get arrested, and therefore she has no intention to return to the U.S.  . . . Conley mentioned an incident where an individual was arrested for attempting to go fight in Syria. She told [investigators] there was nothing they could do to change her mind and that she was still going, although she admitted, 'I know things can go terribly wrong.'"
