Father Scott Thomas: 'We Need to Pray'

By    |   Monday, 09 Sep 2013 05:59 PM

The senior pastor of the Mississippi church that abandoned plans to erect a 110-foot steel cross because officials were afraid it might offend Muslims says his flock will continue to spread the word of God no matter what.

"We need to have a cross. We need to pray. We need to continue to do what we've been called to do and that is we've been called to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ and that he came to save every one of us who are sinners and without Him," Father Scott Thomas told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

Story continues below.

"We just strongly believe that that cross would be such an inspiration to so many, many of those people."

The First Baptist Church of Brandon voted to pull the church’s sponsorship from the project, which was to have been built along Interstate 20 in Brandon.

"The [city's] planning commission voted 4-3 against it and then we started seeing the writing on the wall," he said.

"So I got with the Lord and I prayed … for seven or eight hours and I just decided, you know, we're called to minister to this city. It's obvious that the leaders, they don't feel that our method of raising the cross or erecting a cross is going to do it. So I just want to lead our church and lead our churches instead of erecting a cross to reflect the message of the cross."
