The fastest talking state in the country is Oregon, according to a technology company that analyzed 4 million calls from 2013 to 2015 to measures hold times, rate of speech, and frequency of speech.

The Marchex Institute said it used its Call DNA technology to examine calls placed to businesses over that period, according to its company website. The institute said the technology monitored speech, silence, ring tones, and hold times to identify speech patterns from residents in each state.

Oregon was identified as the state with the fastest talkers in the analysis, followed by Minnesota, Massachusetts, Kansas, and Iowa. Mississippi topped the states with the slowest talkers, followed by Louisiana, South Carolina, Alabama, and North Carolina.

"A clear pattern emerges when viewing the data on a map of the United States," the Marchex website stated. "The slowest talkers — as measured by words per minute — come primarily from the South. The fastest talking population comes from Oregon, and is followed closely by its neighbors in the Pacific Northwest, most of New England, the upper Midwest (states surrounding Minnesota and Iowa) and Florida."

New Yorkers were tapped as the people who talk the most, followed by residents in California, New Jersey, Nevada, and Maryland. People who talked the least were from the states of Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Kansas, and Oklahoma.

"Just because you talk slow doesn't mean you don't talk a lot," the website stated. "Just ask the residents of South Carolina and North Carolina. These states make the top 10 list of 'slow talkers' yet they also make the top 10 list for 'most words in a phone conversation.' . . . The entire Eastern seaboard from Maine to South Carolina (spoke) the most words in a phone conversation."

Megan Garber, a writer for The Atlantic, wrote that study seemed to reinforce cultural stereotypes, such as when Marchex noted that "a New Yorker will use 62 percent more words than someone from Iowa to have the same conversation with a business."

"And, again, the linguistic variations hint at cultural ones. Some of the slower-talking states (Texas, New Mexico, Virginia, etc.) are also some of the wordier, suggesting a premium on connection over efficiency," she wrote. "Some of the fastest-talking states (Idaho, Wyoming, New Hampshire) are also some of the least talkative, suggesting the get-down-to-business mentality commonly associated with those states."
