Facebook plans to "effectively build a teleporter" by 2025, the company's chief technical officer said at a conference on Tuesday.

According to Business Insider, CTO Mike Schroepfer wasn't talking about a literal transporter, but, in fact, a virtual one.

Getting into specifics, Schroepfer said the "teleporter" project would seek to make Facebook's recently acquired Oculus Rift virtual reality headset – set to debut next year – the primary device for immersing oneself in a new environment.

"Facebook wants to build a device that allows you to be anywhere you want, with anyone, regardless of geographic boundaries," he said at a press event before the Dublin Web Summit.

Facebook will aim to tackle virtual reality in three steps in order to close the so-called reality gap.

The company plans to release the Oculus Touch controllers in the second quarter of 2016, to allow people to reach out and touch objects in any virtual space. Combined with a few self-facing cameras, the system will not only allow users to affect the virtual environment as we do the real one, but it will also detect the user's facial movements, and mirror them in the virtual space for other users to see.

"It's incredible how quickly your brain thinks it's with another real person," Schroepfer said of the technology.

Not only is Oculus working on mirroring the user's expressions and actions in virtual space, it is also working on mirroring one's surroundings — in real time — into the 3D landscape. It is doing so by incorporating technology from a company it acquired earlier this year called Surreal Vision.

Last but not least, Facebook said it will release a tool next year to let users create their own virtual environments, called Medium.
