Exeter schoolboys donned skirts at the Isca Academy in England this week after school officials said they could not wear shorts to school despite a heatwave.

About 30 boys arrived for school in skirts Thursday after a handful protested Wednesday when the school turned down their requests to wear shorts as temperatures hovered in the mid-80s, the area's hottest June days since 1876, reported The Guardian.

The newspaper reported that when the boys argued that the girls could bear their legs during the heatwave, the school responded by saying, probably jokingly, that they could wear skirts as well. The boys, though, took them up on it, noted The Guardian.

"We recognize that the last few days have been exceptionally hot and we are doing our utmost to enable both students and staff to remain as comfortable as possible," the school's headteacher, Aimee Mitchell, told The Guardian.

"Shorts are not currently part of our uniform for boys, and I would not want to make any changes without consulting both students and their families. However, with hotter weather becoming more normal, I would be happy to consider a change for the future," she continued.

CNN reported that some of the boys took a liking to the black-and-white tartan skirts, with one calling it "quite refreshing," while another boys saying that it provided "just a nice breeze."

"My son wanted to wear shorts but was told he would be put in the isolation room for the rest of the week," one mother said, according to CNN. "The head teacher told them 'Well you can wear a skirt if you like' but I think she was being sarcastic.

"However children tend to take you literally and so five boys turned up in skirts today – and because she told them it was OK there was nothing she could do as long as they are school skirts."
