Eun Jong Lee Arrest: NY Man Charged With Groping Sleeping Woman on Flight

Eun Jong Lee, a former visiting scholar at Cornell University, was charged with abusive sexual contact and detained at Newark Liberty International Airport over the weekend after allegedly groping a sleeping female passenger on a flight.

Lee, 47, of Ithaca, New York, was taken into custody upon arrival Sunday night at Newark after a flight from Tokyo to New Jersey, according to The Associated Press.

The suspect made his initial court appearance Monday in U.S. District Court in Newark, where he was represented by a federal public defender. Prosecutors said he did not enter a plea during the session.

Lee was listed on Cornell's website as a visiting scholar in the College of Human Ecology between April 2013-March 2014.

In a statement issued Tuesday Vice President for University Relations Joel Malina said: "Eun Jong Lee is not an employee of Cornell University. He has been a visiting scholar on the campus. His privileges at Cornell have been suspended and his future affiliation with the university will be assessed as the facts of this matter are confirmed. The University is cooperating with the authorities. We have no further comment on this matter."

Lee faces up to two years in prison if convicted.

Prosecutors say Lee was seated next to a woman he did not know on a United Airlines flight from Tokyo to Newark. Prosecutors say that while the plane was in the air, the woman woke up to find Lee's hand on the front of her shirt, touching her breast through her clothing.

Lee then allegedly touched the skin of her neck and attempted to put his hand down the front of her shirt, prosecutors said, and the woman said she asked Lee to stop touching her. The woman reported the incident to a flight crew member and provided that person with a written statement describing what happened, prosecutors said.

An after-hours message for Lee's public defender was not returned.

Lee was listed on the Cornell website as a UX design researcher, who has been working closely with Samsung and LG electronics design teams on smart interface/interaction design projects.
